What is a stroke?

A stroke is when the blood flow to the brain stops. A stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 right away if you think that you or someone you know is having a stroke. Telestroke Services

MaineHealth Mid Coast Hospital is part of the MaineHealth Telestroke Network. Available 24/7, this network allows MaineHealth neurovascular experts to provide emergency consultations for stroke patients across the MaineHealth system of care. We bring the expertise of top neurologists to community hospital emergency departments, when it is needed most. Using state-of-the-art video conferencing equipment and electronic transfer of CT scans, the TeleStroke network gives community-based physicians timely access to consultations from specialists skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. 

Our four-hour ALS clinic provides multidisciplinary care for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in one location, on the same day. Patients receive expert services from multiple providers:

  • Rehabilitation evaluation for mobility and assistive devices
  • Neurological evaluation
  • Speech and swallowing evaluation
  • Breathing evaluation
  • Nutrition evaluation
  • Behavioral health
  • Palliative care
  • Symptom management

Some patients benefit from a series of clinic visits. Others may require just one. The clinic is held on the second Friday of each month.
