Diagnostic Radiology Residency

The MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) department of radiology has a long tradition of excellence in residency training. Our program is resident-oriented, with a strong clinical orientation. Our residents are exposed to a great number and variety of cases. Learning on the clinical rotations is augmented with two teaching conferences for radiology residents per day. Residents also attend a wide variety of multidisciplinary conferences and are encouraged to engage in teaching their peers, medical students, non-radiology residents and non-physicians.

Due to their diligence, hard work, the excellent case material, and didactic lectures, our residents perform extremely well on the core exam exceeding RRC expectations. They also obtain top notch fellowship positions and jobs.

Our radiology faculty consists of 35 fellowship-trained radiologists representing all of the radiology subspecialties. We also have three full time physicists on staff including a PhD physicist who is responsible for resident physics education. Residents are closely supervised by attending radiologists with regular sign-outs but are given increasing responsibilities as their competencies increase. With only four residents per year, the program is small enough that the residents are intimately involved with procedures, and the clinical teaching is one-on-one with the faculty members. In addition, faculty and residents get to know each other quite well.

We are a categorical program with both diagnostic and interventional programs. We match four, PGY-1 residents annually, three in diagnostic radiology and one in interventional radiology. The three diagnostic radiology residents pursue diagnostic radiology for four years for a total of five post-graduate years. The interventional radiology resident follows the diagnostic radiology curriculum for three years and pursues interventional radiology for the next two years for a total of six years. Residents participate in work rounds with attending radiologist several times per day.

The Resident Experience at MHMMC

Diagnostic Radiology Residency

The mission of the MMC Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program is to train physicians to be leaders in Radiology in a supportive and healthy learning environment, with an emphasis on diagnostic interpretation, patient safety, collaboration, and innovation.

To train competent and compassionate radiologists, by exposure to a large volume and diversity of cases under an apprenticeship model, and to prepare residents for leadership roles, in either academic or clinical practice

To teach strong teamwork and communication skills through mentorship, direct observation, frequent feedback, and simulation activities

To foster a culture of inquiry, supporting scholarly research, quality improvement initiatives, and innovation across the department

The department of Radiology at Maine Medical Center is committed to actively pursuing and welcoming a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds. We believe that doing so will improve the academic environment, drive innovation, and enhance our ability to provide compassionate and patient-centered care to our patients and their families. Our responsibility is to ensure a safe, inclusive culture, aligned with Maine Health Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion policies, where each person has recognized value. Based in Portland at MMC, a busy 600+ teaching hospital and level one trauma center, our program is resident-oriented, with a strong clinical orientation. Our residents are exposed to a great number and variety of cases. Education on the clinical rotations is augmented with two protected teaching conferences for radiology residents per day. Residents also attend a wide variety of multidisciplinary conferences and are encouraged to engage in teaching their peers, medical students, and visiting non-radiology residents.

Due to their diligence, hard work, the excellent case material, and didactic lectures, our residents perform extremely well on the core exam exceeding RRC expectations. They also obtain top notch fellowship positions and jobs.

Our Radiology faculty consists of approximately 40 fellowship-trained radiologists representing all of the Radiology subspecialties. We also have full-time physicists on staff including a PhD physicist who is responsible for resident physics education. Residents are closely supervised by attending radiologists with regular sign-outs, but are given increasing responsibilities as their competencies increase. With only three diagnostic radiology residents per year, the program is small enough that the residents are intimately involved with cases and procedures. Clinical teaching is one-on-one with faculty members with a strong emphasis on frequent feedback and mentorship.

  • We have no fellows, so our residents are the top educational priority in our department, interpreting diagnostic cases and performing many hands-on procedures.
  • Our outstanding faculty enjoy, and are dedicated to, teaching. Each resident is assigned a faculty mentor who will help nurture their development.
  • We are a categorical program, so all radiology interns work at Maine Medical Center, enabling them to spend 8 weeks in the radiology department during intern year.
  • The faculty belong to a hybrid academic/private practice allowing residents exposure to two of the most common career tracks in radiology. This allows them to make a more informed decision when it comes to selecting employment opportunities after graduation.
  • Our residents match into top notch fellowship programs of their choice. Learn more about our alumni.

While you are looking at our program you should also check out all the wonderful things to see and do in Portland. It is a truly beautiful place with four seasons of outdoor activities to enjoy. Welcome to the department of Radiology at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC).  Our mission is to provide high quality affordable care, educating tomorrow’s caregivers, and researching better ways to provide care. Our residency is thriving, and recently has expanded.  We pride ourselves in attracting bright, kind residents from various regions who embrace learning in a high acuity environment, while balancing a healthy lifestyle.

The Faculty

We have over 45 radiologists on staff, the majority of whom are fellowship trained. With this level of sub specialization, we are able to provide targeted education in each field of practice.  This includes IR, pediatrics, breast imaging, body MRI, MSK, neuroradiology, chest , ultrasound and emergency room imaging.  Our didactics cover these areas, and we provide dedicated teaching all day at the workstation on each rotation.  Our IR department is robust, and we have successfully launched the first graduates of our IR residency.

The daily working environment can be described as busy but fun.  Our attendings get to know you on a personal level, and the mentor relationships and friendships often last well beyond your departure.  Many of our staff have trained here, attesting to the strong bonds we forge.

The Facilities

At MHMMC, we support a 700 plus bed hospital, with the state’s only level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and a pediatric hospital within the hospital. Our residents see a wide range of pathology, and leave here exceedingly well trained in all disciplines.  We currently have four dual energy CT scanners in house, as well as two additional dual energy outpatient CT scanners.  We have two inpatient MRI units, and five outpatient units.  We pride ourselves in our up to date protocols, with services that support all types of tumor boards.  We have a full nuclear medicine department, with recent expansion into theranostics. Our breast-imaging center is the best in the state, with weekly tumor boards, and an active procedure team including MRI guided biopsies.  MHMMC has had a recent expansion with the Malone Family tower, a dedicated cardiac building.

Research and Education

Our research efforts continue to grow, with a myriad of activities including grants, QI projects, case reports, abstracts, and journal articles.  We are excited with our recent hire of a research navigator, who has already made in impact with a goal of teaching and familiarizing our residents with all aspects of research. Our lecture series including grand rounds have expanded, and we have had a wide range of national speakers on topics including AI, DEI, as well as quality initiatives.

We are increasing our residents’ options, and are open to creating mini fellowships during your residency, with the goal of getting you ready for what your future job needs.

Patient population and region

Portland has evolved into a bustling, diverse, urban environment.  Our patient population draws from all over the world, with a diverse number of languages.  The population of the greater Portland region explodes in the summer, with travelers from everywhere arriving to experience the beauty, and eat our cosmopolitan food. Our role is to take care of all. This includes our diverse community, the undeserved, our elderly community, the children, and our visitors. It is a tremendous gift to live and experience this environment, and to teach and learn here.

We consider our hospital, our training program, and the region to be a diamond.  It offers a unique combination:  A large hospital teeming with residents and educational opportunities that supports all populations, surrounded by a city that offers music, food, art and outdoor activities.  You are able to swim, surf, hike and ski.  We would love to meet you and share with you our experiences.

Sharon G Siegel, MD

Hello and welcome to the MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) Diagnostic Radiology Residency program! As a medical student, I spent a lot of time trying to ascertain what type of program I wanted to train in and what type of physician I wanted to become. After much thought, I determined the right fit for me was a residency that combined a breadth of firsthand learning opportunities with a training environment that was both welcoming and resident centered. After having the opportunity to rotate here during my fourth year of medical school, MHMMC served as the model by which I compared all other programs.

As a medical student at MHMMC, I was welcomed into the department and immersed in the day-to-day of a diagnostic radiology resident. I witnessed the degree of commitment each attending put toward teaching and was impressed with the level of consideration and detail every person I interacted with put into caring for patients. I also came to appreciate how engaged all levels of trainees were in all aspects of radiology. In addition to these factors, the program made a clear and concerted effort toward prioritizing resident wellness. The residents I interacted with daily appeared authentically happy. On interview day, it was apparent how thoroughly each interviewer had reviewed my application. I was shown a genuine interest in not only my education and academics, but also who I was as a person.

These types of experiences centered within a quaint New England coastal city added to the draw of the program. Portland continues to offer high class restaurants, award-winning breweries, and unparalleled access to all things outdoors.

I can confidently say that all these experiences have held true throughout my training thus far, and I remain eager to come to work each day. There is no question that training at MHMMC has helped shape me into not only a competent radiologist, but also a thoughtful and considerate person.
