Medical Education
Fellows with interest in medical education have access to resources to help them develop as an educator. Through the MHMMC Institute for Teaching Excellence (MITE Academy), fellows have access to asynchronous curriculum such as MITE Best Practices in Teaching Online, MITE Curriculum Development Guide, MITE Mentoring Guide, MITE Physicians as Educators, Flipped Classroom and MITE clinical teaching certificate which can be completed during elective time.
Fellows supervise medical students from Tufts University Medical School and UNECOM, as well as house staff in residency programs at Maine Medical Center. Interprofessional education is highly valued at our institution.
Research
Basic, translational and clinical research opportunities are available through MaineHealth Institute for Research and fellows can collaborate with scientists at Center for Outcomes Research & Evaluation (CORE). Through MITE, Fellows can asynchronously complete a course on MITE Physicians as Researchers and MITE Best Practices in Manuscript Peer Review.
A competitive grant is available for house staff interested in mentored research. Monthly research meetings in the cardiac service line serve as an avenue for fellows to present their research ideas to scientists from MHIR for suggestions on how to develop research projects as well as obtain funding. The director of research of the department is the former fellowship program director and is actively involved in fellows’ mentorship.
Other Scholarly Opportunities
Many fellows have participated in quality improvement projects with full support from the RNs and Mas in the fellows clinic. Academic tracks are available for fellows with interest in clinical education, leadership, research and clinical informatics.
