Vascular Surgery Residency

The MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) vascular surgery residency program provides comprehensive training, knowledge and skills needed for the independent practice of all aspects of vascular surgery. Our focus is clinically oriented with a strong foundation in all aspects of open and endovascular surgery, critical care and core general surgery principles. Our program is ACGME approved and designed to enable eligibility for certification in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

As one of the major teaching hospitals of Tufts School of Medicine, we also incorporate a strong focus on academics, with weekly case conferences, journal club, vascular lab and VSCORE-based didactics. We also encourage residents to participate on one of the division’s many active clinical or basic science research projects.

During the first three years of the program, rotations are incrementally split between vascular surgery service and core general surgical-based rotations critical to the development of a well-rounded vascular surgeon. Mid-level residents will have time for elective rotations in areas of clinical interest to complement their vascular education.

The fourth and fifth year will serve as senior residency years in vascular surgery, allowing the resident to run their own service. This culminates in the guided, but autonomous, chief rotation in the final months of the PGY5 year, during which the chief resident essentially runs their own vascular practice.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)

The MHMMC Integrated Vascular Residency faculty, staff, and learners believe that an inclusive and diverse work environment is an integral part of the foundation of a more equitable and just society. In an effort to provide better care and improve the health of our population, we include in our curriculum education, support, and conversations around topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We strive to recruit residents who embody diverse characteristics and grow with us to serve the patients of our state, country, and beyond. We also strive to create an environment of belonging. We are committed and devoted to anti-racism and anti-violence work. Current and future programming includes:

  • Commitment to recruitment and retention of diverse medical students, applicants, residents, and faculty;
  • Implicit bias training for application reviewers and candidate interviewers;
  • Holistic, unblinded review of applications with attention to life experience;
  • Didactic sessions to amplify the voices of immigrants and asylees, LGBTQI+, BIPOC, homeless, and marginalized populations;
  • Ongoing review and revision of curriculum with consideration to how our program amplifies diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Visiting Student Diversity Scholarship Program

The Department of Medical Education developed the Diversity Scholarship Award Program to help advance MaineHealth’s mission to actively pursue and welcome a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds. We believe with this program, we will improve the academic environment, drive innovation and attract leadership – ultimately, enhancing our ability to train future medical providers to provide high quality, socially responsible and equitable care to all patients and their families.

MHMMC’s Department of Medical Education offers eight $500 scholarship awards per academic year for those applying to advanced electives with identities and backgrounds that are considered underrepresented in medicine. The AAMC has previously defined underrepresented in medicine as "those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." The Department of Medical Education endeavors for this to be an inclusive definition that is open to individual interpretation. Other examples may include physically disabled, economically disadvantaged, or LGBTQ+ students.

This scholarship award may be applied towards travel, housing and incidental expenses related to a month long visiting rotation. View the program overview to find out if you are eligible and to learn more about the application process. Questions?
