Teaching Conferences

  • Morning Report is a definite favorite among residents and faculty. It is a one-hour conference held four days per week in Internal Medicine and in 30 minutes in Pediatrics. Residents discuss current cases and focus on differential diagnosis, evaluation, management, cost-effective decision-making, or a review of a core topic in adult/pediatric medicine. Many generalists and specialists also attend morning report, lending their expertise.
  • Work Rounds are conducted daily on the Internal Medicine and the Pediatric inpatient teams and are led by the senior residents and include Attending Rounds with bed-side teaching.
  • Grand Rounds are held once weekly in both Internal Medicine and in Pediatrics. These conferences bring together a wide academic and community provider population. MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) attracts local, national, and international speakers. Topics are applicable to both primary care and subspecialty medicine. All Med-Peds and Pediatric residents in their final year present a Pediatric Grand Rounds on a topic of interest.
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference occurs ~ once each month in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. These conferences are centered on patient safety events and near misses with a focus on systems issues related to each case. All residents present an M&M during their four years of residency.
  • Journal Club is held monthly in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and bimonthly for Med-Peds. The Med-Peds Journal Clubs are held in the evenings at faculty homes.
  • The Internal Medicine Didactics are split up for intern and senior levels on different half days. Residents have protected time for two and a half hours to focus on selected curriculum of primary care and subspecialty topics. Faculty and fellows cover patient care.
  • Pediatric Didactics occur every Thursday for two hours and are led by Pediatric generalists and specialists. This time is protected for residents with faculty covering patient care.
  • Internal Medicine-Pediatric Didactic occur prior to continuity clinic sessions with a focus on primary care topics. Residents/faculty use Hopkins and Yale modules to prepare/present succinct core topic teaching sessions.
  • Pediatrics Interprofessional Educational Sessions are sessions that include talks pertinent to all of the members of the pediatrics team including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical/occupational therapists, speech therapists, and social workers on inpatient unit.
