Sarah Lazur, MD
Hometown: Martinsburg, West Virginia
Undergraduate: West Virginia University
Medical School: West Virginia University
Interests / Hobbies: cooking, trail running, road cycling, hiking, backpacking, making myself laugh, reading
Favorite place in Maine: Ask me in a year! So far, every day spent outside either on my bike, at the local beaches, or traveling to the mountains has been wonderful
Medical interests: Primary Care, hospital medicine, endocrinology... so, if you couldn’t already tell, I’m you’re typical med-peds “can’t make your mind up” type.
Favorite Maine activity: Biking to and from my house to Maine Beer Company- gorgeous road ride with the perfect pit stop.
What did you do before medical school: I worked as a chemical engineer in Tennessee for four years, with a sprinkling of tutoring high school students in the middle
Personal goals: Work hard, learn a ton, and have a fulfilling life outside of medicine. I’m always trying to cultivate and maintain a happy and healthy existence outside of medicine- I love this career, but my relationships and experiences outside of the hospital are what bring me the most joy.
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: My best job was also the worst - my first engineering job after undergrad at age 21, making more money than I EVER will as a resident, but absolutely miserable and unfulfilled. Craziest job - transcribing obituaries at the local newspaper in my hometown.
Why Maine Medical Center: I wanted a program that would both challenge and support me, feel like family, and be in location that allowed my days outside of the hospital to be full of adventure! MMC checked all of those boxes and more.
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… vegetable farmer!
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Scratch bakery for bagels
Stephen Long, MD
Hometown: Bethlehem, PA
Undergraduate: The University of Scranton
Medical School: Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine
Interests / Hobbies: I love listening to music, playing the guitar, reading books, and hanging out with my little dog Odie
Favorite place in Maine: Toss-up between Fort Williams Park and Two Lights State Park
Medical interests: Cardiology, Hospital Medicine
Favorite Maine activity: Taking in all of the incredible sights!
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: I worked at a thermocouple manufacturer during all of my school breaks in college
Why Maine Medical Center: So many reasons! The people: when I was interviewing for residency, I prioritized finding a program that supported me. Knowing that there are plenty of people to lean on has made the transition into residency much less intimidating. The patients: I am really excited to take care of Portland’s refugee population in the resident clinic. The place: Portland rules! The variety of food is unbelievable, the coast line is gorgeous, and living so close to the ocean is just amazing.
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… college professor
Favorite restaurant in Portland: I feel like I haven’t even scratched the surface yet, but the Bite Into Maine food truck at Fort Williams Park is pretty spectacular.
Micah Ludwig, MD
Hometown: Waldoboro, ME
Undergraduate: Bowdoin College
Medical School: Tufts University School of Medicine- Maine Track Program
Interests / Hobbies: Baking, skiing, hiking, biking, gardening, watching cute dog videos
Favorite place in Maine: It’s hard to pick just one, but I’m particularly fond of the blueberry barrens and rocky coastline in Washington County. People often don’t realize you can go further east than Acadia- you can and it’s well worth the drive.
Medical interests: Pediatric hospital medicine and nephrology are at the top of my list at the moment, but it’s always changing. I’m particularly passionate about helping sick kids become healthy adults.
Favorite weekend destination: In the winter I’d say Sugarloaf. During the spring, summer, and fall I’m happy if I’m next to some body of water (even if it’s just my parent’s pool).
Favorite Maine activity: Snowshoeing with my dad during/after a big snow storm
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: In junior high and high school I worked on a vegetable farm. During the summer I would have to wake up at 4:00 AM to pick corn. Sweet corn must picked during the cool part of the day to maintain optimal sweetness. Corn husks and stalks can cause some of the worst cuts and scrapes I have ever experienced. I was always happy when school started because I got to sleep later and my hands could heal.
Why Maine Medical Center: I had the opportunity to complete many rotations at Maine Medical Center during medical school, and I found it to be an incredibly collaborative and supportive environment. Maine Medical Center is a safe place to be a learner, and questions are always welcomed with enthusiasm. There is also a small town feel as MMC, despite serving a large catchment area.
Celebrity I most resemble: A chubby Chris Pratt

Celebrity I most resemble: A young Kevin Bacon
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be an… International Aid Worker
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Chipotle (Sorry I’m not very interesting)
Personal Quote: “Just start putting yourself in situations that suck, that’s when you’ll find yourself” - Goggins
Jacob Cooper, M.D.
Hometown: Mt. Vernon, Texas
Undergraduate: Baylor University
Medical School: University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School
Interests / Hobbies: Cooking, gardening, volleyball, reading, hiking, and my three rescue dogs
Favorite place in Maine: It's been a crazy year and I'd never been to Maine when I matched. Ask me in a year!
Medical interests: Broadly, global health, caring for underserved folks, and health policy/systems changes. The details of how I want to do that change monthly.
Favorite Maine activity: Checking out any of the (many) local breweries
What did you do before medical school: Clinical research for a few years, then a Masters in health policy in London
Personal goals: Working to find a balance between my interests in clinical medicine and health policy/systems work and figuring out what that looks like long term. For intern year, balancing working hard and learning while maintaining my (many) interests outside of medicine.
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: I grew up on a cattle farm, so that was probably the best and worst job. Craziest? I consulted on a project for the Qatari Ministry of Public Health as a masters student.
Why Maine Medical Center: I was born and raised in Texas and wanted to see what life was like in another area of the country. I was also looking for a program that was supportive and would foster me as an individual with my various interests outside clinical medicine.
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… chef!
Favorite restaurant in Portland: I’ve only been to a few so far, but probably Luke’s
Jasmine Landry, M.D.

Medical interests: Primary care, refugee health, harm reduction, working with patients who use drugs
Favorite Maine activity: biking around Portland to different coffee shops, breweries, and ocean views
What did you do before medical school: I worked in an immunology lab supervising student researchers and spent a lot of free time volunteering with high school exchange students.
Personal goals: Learn something from everyone I work with, explore Maine parks/trails/coasts, build new relationships with people at Maine Med
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: Craziest job: apprenticing as a chimney sweep. It was cold, dirty work but gave me some great stories. Best job: canoe instructor at a summer camp.
Why Maine Medical Center: I wanted to train in an urban setting with a diverse patient population but I also wanted a "small town" feel to live in. I wanted a program that felt like a family with trainees and faculty who support each other, and I feel I've found that at Maine Med.
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… bike messenger
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Hot Suppa- southern food with great cocktails
Bailey O'Donnell, M.D.
Hometown: Roxbury, NY
Undergraduate: Hartwick College
Medical School: SUNY Upstate
Interests / Hobbies: running, hiking, walking my dogs, peloton riding, skiing, snowshoeing, cooking/baking random recipes I find on Pinterest, attending outdoor concerts, reading
Favorite place in Maine: I have only been in Maine for one month so it is really hard to say right now! However, I imagine some of my favorite places will be somewhere in the mountains or at the beach. Any place I can adventure with my dogs is an automatic favorite.
Medical interests: As a typical future Med-Peds physician, literally anything and everything. Currently, I am leaning towards inpatient medicine. Most recently, I have been telling people that my ideal day would be spent working in the newborn nursery in the morning and a nursing home in the afternoon. (That will probably change a bunch of times over this four year adventure)
Favorite Maine activity: Searching for the best mac-and-cheese, soft ice cream cones, and hiking trails Maine has to offer.
What did you do before medical school: I only had three months off between undergraduate graduation and starting medical school. I wish I could say I spent that time exploring the country or the world. Instead, I worked many long hours as a phlebotomist at a small medical center near my hometown.
Personal goals: Inside the hospital, work as a hard as I can and learn as much as I can while being a compassionate human being. Outside the hospital, hike as many mountains and eat as many sprinkle-covered soft ice cream cones as I can.
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: Throughout high school, I worked as a housekeeper at an internationally-known boutique motel in my "middle-of-no-where" hometown. I had the best bosses in the world. If I loved hospitality, I never would have left!
Why Maine Medical Center: I honestly had never visited Maine before I applied for residency. The minute I met the residents at the pre-interview dinner, I knew that they were "my people." They also seemed to love the outdoors, their pets, and their program! I had a feeling that at this program, I would be supported by the program directors and my fellow residents. Everyone seemed like a big family. Lastly, life outside the hospital is full of many opportunities for outdoor adventures!
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be... most likely a veterinarian. However, I also think it would be really be fun to be an elementary physical education teacher with a side gig as a dog walker/puppy raiser.
Favorite restaurant in Portland: Eventide (the Brussels Sprouts rock my socks!)

Medical interests: Hospital medicine, academic medicine/med education (I LOVE students!), public health, and social determinants of health
Favorite Maine activity: Walking with my dog along the Eastern Prom and watching the sunrise - the views are GORGEOUS and it is so peaceful in the early morning
What did you do before medical school: I worked as a research assistant studying bacterial-fungal biofilms in mouse models. More interestingly, I also volunteered as a dog walker and adoption counselor at my local shelter - I was usually sweaty and smelly by the end of each shift, but I always left with a smile on my face.
Personal goals: Be more courageous in saying "I don't know" and asking questions, and strive for balance during my time outside the hospital. I'm trying to be more conscientious of my personal life and happiness, especially since it can be so easy to put on the back-burner throughout school. Also, I would love to be better at cooking and learning some of my parents' traditional recipes.
Craziest / Best / Worst Job: Craziest/worst job - during undergrad, I watched hundreds of hours of videos of Australian bowerbirds building nests for a research project, and recorded all my data on floppy disks... Best job - working as a teaching fellow at UNE COM!
Why Maine Medical Center: I did a few rotations here as a 4th year med student and always felt well-supported and mentored, but also was continuously challenged to grow. I knew I wanted to be part of a welcoming community that valued the learners - MMC fit the bill perfectly!
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a…ice cream taste-tester, or dog trainer!

What did you do before medical school: worked in pediatric precision medicine/clinical research at MSKCC and completed a master’s research project in stem cell biology.
Personal goals: I would love to further build clinical reasoning skills and develop confidence along with it. I want to be able to look at most problems in a methodical/systematic way to better address them. Most importantly I want to be able to grow and learn in this program/institution and continue to balance/prioritize my personal life and interests.
Craziest/Best/Worst Job: I spent a summer going door-to-door at different restaurants/bars/markets in Manhattan, slinging ‘free, premium’ hand sanitizer stations. I worked for commissions and was only able to unload a single unit…
Why Maine Medical Center: I was able to experience MMC firsthand during my clinical years of medical school. Not only is Portland the city we wanted to continue to grow/live in, but I was also able to appreciate all the amazing/talented and dedicated faculty and residents across all departments. The dedication to teaching but also to advocating for genuine happiness was evident on day 1. MMC wears so many different hats in the community and as an academic center. Its diverse aims aligned perfectly with my diverse interests.
If I wasn’t a doctor, I would be a… butcher/charcutier. I love to open a nose-to-tail butcher shop and artisanal charcuterie production workshop, working with local farmers, and would operate a small wine bar/restaurant.

I wanted to be at a large academic medical center that still had a small community feel and MMC is just that. I loved how close-knit and down-to-earth the residents, attendings and staff members were and the great learning environment it fostered. There are also really unique rural medicine opportunities. And of course Portland is such an amazing place to live with unlimited access to skiing, hiking, beaches and amazing restaurants/breweries.
