Mission Statement and Program Objectives
Our mission is to educate and train fellows to become professional, compassionate, curious and independent clinicians with competence in the interpretation of medical evidence, communication skills, and the appropriate diagnostic work-up and team-based management of patients with various malignancies and benign hematologic conditions. Given the social and demographic realities of the community we serve, the training will address the unique challenges in the care of patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, rural settings and geriatric populations, while working to research and innovate the hematology-oncology care delivered to these populations.
Our fellowship objectives:
- Graduates will be competent clinicians with the ability to independently diagnose and manage hematologic and malignant conditions.
- Graduates will be trained to serve as community-based hematologists/oncologists with sub-specialty expertise.
- Graduates will receive dedicated training in the care of a geriatric and rural population, reflecting the unique demographics of our state.
- Didactics will emphasize evidence-based decision making, critical reviews of the literature, and team-based and inter-professional approaches to cancer care.
- Graduates will be competent in the performance of essential procedures such as bone marrow aspiration/biopsy, reviewing peripheral blood smears, and administering intra-thecal chemotherapy.
- Fellows will work to innovate the care delivery they participate in through quality improvement projects and mentored research with the goal of sharing their work to the medical community at large.
- Fellows will develop expertise in the palliative approach to patients and end of life care.
- Fellows will participate in the education of residents and medical students.
- Fellows will develop an understanding of grant writing, clinical research and will actively engage in the care of patients enrolled on clinical trials
