Boot Camp

Boot Camp is a high-yield educational lecture and instructional series that occurs early in the first year of fellowship and is aimed at acclimating new fellows to our Hematology and Oncology Fellowship program and the care of cancer patients at MaineHealth. Topics covered include:

  • Oncologic emergencies
  • Pharmacology
  • Palliative care
  • Oncology nutrition
  • Social work
  • Oncology financial support

Academic Half Days

Academic Half Days will take place one afternoon per week. During each half-day session, we aim to engage fellows in a variety of educational formats with the goal of expanding knowledge and sharing ideas and experience. The typical half day will include:

Core curriculum lecture series

These will be engaging, interactive, disease specific sessions delivered by our core faculty.

ASCO resiliency curriculum

A career in oncology is extremely fulfilling, but also poses challenges leading to high rates of burnout. During year one of fellowship, we will be working through ASCO’s resiliency curriculum, which is an eight-part interactive series built around techniques such as:

  • Understanding and utilizing one’s strengths
  • Understanding cognitive distortions
  • Mindfulness
  • Finding healthy boundaries
  • Keeping purpose in view
  • Improving wellness and preventing burnout

MHMMC also offers a resident and fellow wellness program.

Journal Club

To foster a commitment to life-long learning and appraisal of new research, our curriculum for fellows includes a monthly journal club presentation. Fellows will work with the faculty to choose relevant articles and frame a discussion by reviewing how the article fits in the current understanding of the disease, treatment or biology being discussed. The goals of this conference are to simultaneously review new studies, develop framework with critical thinking and nuanced understandings of research design in order to critically appraise the research, as well as generating excitement and interest in life-long learning.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference (M&M)

To facilitate reflection, learning and in-depth analysis from cases with sub-optimal outcomes, fellows will be required to present at Morbidity and Mortality Conference. This setting will be a non-punitive, department-wide forum for fellows to perform root cause analysis on such cases. Multi-disciplinary and inter-professional engagement will be encouraged as well as evidence-based approaches to improving future practice. Fellows will be paired with faculty to assist with choosing and presenting the case.

Hematology and Oncology Grand Rounds

Hematology and Oncology Grand Rounds will be an opportunity to invite leading experts to present cutting-edge research and updates in disease-specific areas. Sub-specialists and core faculty will also present annual MHMMC cancer care updates. Third year fellows will be expected to present their research at this forum.
