Preparing for your lab visit
Tell your health care provider about all medications and supplements that you are currently taking on a regular basis. Some medications and supplements may affect the outcome of your test.
Drink plenty of water and avoid drinks that contain caffeine. This will help the phlebotomist find a vein and collect the sample more easily.
Many tests require fasting. If your doctor has ordered fasting blood work, you should not eat or drink anything except water for 10-12 hours before your test. Common tests that require fasting include:
- Lipid profile/cholesterol test
- Blood glucose test
- Liver test
- Basic metabolic panel

When you arrive at one of our walk-in patient service centers, you will be asked to take a number. A care team member will call your number when it's your turn. Even if you are just dropping off a sample, you will still need to take a number. We'll want to make sure that:
- The proper specimen has been delivered
- The specimen is labeled correctly
- We have a test order from your provider on file
- Your insurance information is up to date
Some of our testing locations are by appointment only. Learn more about NorDx patient service centers.
