The MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) integrated Internal Medicine Geriatrics Residency and Fellowship (IM-Ger) is an innovative, four-year (48 month) ACGME-approved program. It is sponsored by the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and the Association of Directors of Geriatric Programs (ADGAP) as part of their Advancing Innovation in Residency Education (AIRE) program with the ACGME.
The MHMMC IM-Ger program is one of the first of its kind in the country and is the only one to focus on rural geriatric primary care medicine. Our program is structured to provide both a robust inpatient experience at Maine’s largest tertiary teaching hospital and access to the state’s network of rural health providers through partnerships with VA Maine and the MaineHealth system.
The program integrates geriatric medicine experiences throughout all four years of training to provide for early exposure and mentorship. While this does not shorten the total training time, it does allow residents the opportunity to customize their training experience to meet individual learning plans at the end of their fourth year. IM-Ger residents are eligible to become board certified in internal medicine at the end of three years and in geriatric medicine at the end of the program.
Goals and Objectives:
- To train general internists/geriatricians with the competence and confidence to provide high quality, patient-centered care in rural communities and resource poor areas.
- To prepare our graduates to recognize and reduce rural health disparities, especially of older adults and those at highest risk of adverse outcomes
- To provide excellent integrated clinical training in diverse, interprofessional collaborative settings with early and ongoing mentorship and career guidance in geriatrics.
Educational Partners:
- MaineHealth Maine Medical Center
- VA Maine Healthcare System

Internal Medicine Residency
MHMMC has been training internal medicine residents since 1956. Residents say they value our unique combination of broad clinical exposure at a large academic medical center with the personalized attention and mentorship of a smaller residency program.
Geriatrics Fellowship
The MHMMC Geriatric Fellowship program prepares graduates to meet the clinical and leadership needs of our state. We offer traditional, one-year/full-time and innovative, two-year/part-time programs to suit learners in any stage of their careers. Our highly-regarded long-term care continuity experience, a major strength of the program, allows fellows to manage frailty and multi-morbidity with the assistance of an interdisciplinary team.
MaineHealth Maine Medical Center is committed to sustaining a welcoming, respectful, equitable and inclusive medical training environment.
