MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland (MHMMC Portland) received an “A” grade in the fall 2024 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing MHMMC Portland’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections. This rating demonstrates how focused our care team is on providing a safe place for patients to come to for their health care. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade is updated every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

 

U.S. News & World Report has named MHMMC Portland as the top hospital in Maine for 2024-2025. This is the 12th straight year U.S. News has named MHMMC Portland “Best Regional Hospital.” We were recognized for these procedures and conditions:

The Joint Commission has certified MHMMC Portland as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest level of designation for stroke care, and the first in the state of Maine. This designation means that we are ready to treat the most complex stroke cases, including interventional techniques, 24/7. We follow national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.

The MHMMC Portland Spinal Surgery program has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

MHMMC Portland received a 5-Star rating for overall quality from the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid in July of 2023. The CMS star rating uses publicly available Medicare program data to summarize quality information across five categories of care into a single star rating for each hospital. 2022 Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing. Magnet status is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an independent organization within the American Nurses Association. Magnet recognition is widely considered to be the ultimate credential for high-quality nursing care. MHMMC Portland was first recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2006 and was consecutively re‐designated in 2011, 2017, and 2022, proving our commitment to the highest level of quality care. MHMMC Portland’s Specialty Pharmacy recently received full accreditation from URAC, the governing body that evaluates pharmacy program quality. The accreditation is an indicator that our specialty pharmacy maintains the highest standards of quality, patient centeredness and access to care.

The Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network, an initiative of the Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine, recognized MHMMC Portland in 2014 and in 2016, as a hospital that has worked hard to make their campus a 100% tobacco-free environment by awarding MHMMC Portland the Gold Standard of Excellence Award.
