What is pediatric emergency care?
Pediatric emergency care is acute medical care specifically for children. Young patients are treated by emergency medicine specialists for a variety of emergency conditions.
Conditions commonly treated
- Infant less than 3 months of age with a fever
- Trouble breathing
- Severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away
- Bad cuts
- Eye injury
- Head injury
- Possible broken bone or severe injury
- Serious allergic reaction
- Drug overdose
- Vomiting that doesn’t go away
- Dehydration
If your child is experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency, call 911 or go to the closest hospital emergency department. Depending on your child's condition, they may recommend a transfer to MaineHealth Maine Medical Center which is home to the state’s only dedicated pediatric emergency department.
