Urgent Care

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I go to urgent care versus the emergency room?

Urgent care is best for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that still need same-day attention such as sprains, minor cuts, ear infections, or fevers. The emergency room is for life-threatening conditions, including chest pain, difficulty breathing, or stroke symptoms. If you are having a medical emergency, please call 9-1-1.

What is the difference between MaineHealth Urgent Care and MaineHealth Urgent Care Plus?

Both MaineHealth Urgent Care and MaineHealth Urgent Care Plus provide walk-in care for non-life-threatening health concerns, often with shorter wait times than the emergency room. MaineHealth Urgent Care treats illnesses and injuries in need of immediate attention, while MaineHealth Urgent Care Plus offers more advanced testing, imaging, and treatment for more serious needs. Please note that MaineHealth Urgent Care Plus are billed as emergency services.

Will my insurance cover an urgent care visit?

Most health insurance plans cover urgent care visits, but coverage and co-pays vary depending on your provider and plan. Check with your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits and costs for the location you plan to visit. If your plan does not cover services at MaineHealth Urgent Care, a receipt and discharge paperwork will be provided for you to submit for reimbursement.

What is the visit cost if I don’t have health insurance?

If you do not have insurance, or if this location is out of network for your insurance, the cost of an urgent care visit is usually between $238 to $440. If you need lab tests or X-rays, the total cost will be higher. Even with these added services, urgent care usually costs less than an emergency room visit for the same non-life-threatening problems.

How much do tests and imaging exams cost?

Costs of laboratory tests and imaging depend on the test. A list of frequently ordered tests and their costs is available at the Urgent Care location.

How can I pay for my visit?

If you do not have insurance, or if we are out of network for your insurance, the base cost of your visit is due at check-in. Any extra costs for tests or imaging will be billed to you later. We accept credit, debit, and Health Savings Account (HSA) cards. If you are unable to pay, our check-in team can help you request financial assistance.
