Gender Care

MaineHealth Specialty Care Portland is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of transgender, gender diverse and questioning people across Northern New England. Our team is focused on the entire well-being of each patient, including medical and behavioral health care.

On December 18, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a proposed rule stating that hospitals offering gender‑affirming medical care to minors - including treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy - would no longer be eligible to receive Medicare or Medicaid payments. If this rule is finalized, MaineHealth would not be able to provide these medical treatments to pediatric and adolescent patients within our system.

However, we remain committed to ensuring every patient receives the highest‑quality, evidence‑based care. We will continue to offer behavioral health support for transgender youth and will work closely with patients and families to help them access any needed medical services—even if that care must be coordinated outside of the MaineHealth system.

Current services

We work with each person to decide on the different services they may need. We do not believe all patients will benefit from the same services. If a patient is already working with a therapist, we will talk with that therapist about treatment.

  • Mental health evaluation
  • Brief individual & family therapy
  • Consultation with psychiatry
  • Consultation with spiritual care (chaplain)
  • Ongoing consultation between mental health and medical providers (related to gender)
  • Menstrual suppression (stopping unwanted periods)
  • Puberty blockers (ways to stop puberty hormones)
  • Gender affirming hormone therapy (estrogen or testosterone)
  • Surgical consultation (mental health letter of referral for patients over the age of 18 only)
