Michael F McGrath, MD
- Thoracic Surgery (Cardiothoracic Vascular Surgery)
I am a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed my residency in General Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center followed by a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. I also completed a Surgical research fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and a Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. I then joined a private practice in Norfolk, VA, where I was also Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Surgical Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Service at the Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk.
I had always wanted to move to Maine having spent summers here as a child. Luckily, a position opened here at MMC in late 2016 and I jumped at the chance! In my spare time, I serve in the U.S. Navy Reserve. I am currently the Commanding Officer of OHSU Camp Lejeune, a 400-person medical unit based in North Carolina. I hold the rank of Captain in the U.S. Navy, and in 2005 I deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. My outside interests include live music, surfing, skiing, lacrosse and cooking.
