MaineHealth Pen Bay and Waldo Hospitals Launch Accessible Drug Take-Back Program for Community Safety

June 5, 2025

ROCKPORT AND BELFAST, ME — MaineHealth Pen Bay (MHPBH) and Waldo Hospitals (MHWH) are excited to announce the launch of a secure and convenient medication take-back program on their campuses.

Both hospitals have installed new take-back kiosks within their main lobbies, offering year-round, no-cost disposal for residents of Knox and Waldo counties. The kiosks provide a place for community members to safely discard unused, expired or leftover prescription and over-the-counter medications.

“In communities like Knox and Waldo, where safe medication disposal options are limited, having a drug take-back kiosk in our local hospitals is a critical step in reducing misuse, protecting families, and keeping harmful substances out of our environment,” said David MacMilllan, PharmD, director of pharmacy at MHPBH and MHWH.

Items not accepted through the kiosks include herbal remedies, vitamins, supplements, cosmetics, personal care products, empty medical devices, batteries, sharps, mercury containing thermometers and illicit drugs. Additional details can be found on the kiosks.

The Knox County take-back kiosk can be found just inside the main entrance of MHPBH, located at 6 Glen Cove Drive, Rockport. The Waldo County kiosk can be found inside the main lobby of MHWH, located at 118 Northport Ave., Belfast.
